oishi don our story

Our Story

From Japan…

We are Shane and Liz the founders of Oishī Don, Japanese street food stall. We are a Walthamstow couple who have a real passion for food, Shane is a professional chef and Liz works in the music Industry. ‘Oishī’ translates to ‘delicious’ and ‘Don’ is short for ‘donburi’ meaning rice bowl. We currently have 2 stand out dishes on our menu – a Wagyu Dripping Steak Don and a Vegan Aubergine Don.

We took a trip to Japan last year and fell in love with the food, people and culture.

…to Walthamstow

During lockdown we were craving this amazing steak don that we ate on our trip. We managed to recreate it and soon realized that there wasn’t anywhere in London serving this. We thought this would be a fantastic concept to start a new venture.

From that day, we’ve put all our energy into turning the idea into reality and finally opened in October 2020, 4 months after recreating that dish! We have since been trading on Saturdays at Orford Road Market. We are currently trying to juggle our full-time jobs as well as running the business in our spare time. Shane is looking to take it on full-time in the New Year, with new and exciting ideas in the pipeline!
